Product & Colours

How much paint do I need?

The easiest way to estimate how much paint you'll need is by using the Paint Calculator available on our product pages.

Coverage information is also provided on every product page to help you calculate your requirements.

Most decorating projects will require two coats of paint, so we recommend allowing for this when calculating quantities.

How many coats of paint do I need?

Most decorating projects will require two coats of paint to achieve the best colour depth, coverage and finish.

However, the number of coats required can vary depending on:

  • The surface being painted
  • The colour you're covering
  • The colour you've chosen
  • The condition of the surface

For best results, always follow the application guidance provided on the product label and product page.

What paint finish should I choose?

The right finish depends on the room, surface and look you're trying to achieve.

Matt

Matt is a modern, non-reflective finish designed to help soften walls and hide minor surface imperfections. Its low-sheen appearance makes it a popular choice for living rooms, bedrooms and other spaces where a contemporary finish is desired.

Mid-Sheen

Mid-Sheen is a softer low-sheen finish that sits between Matt and Silk. It offers a subtle light-reflecting appearance while maintaining a softer look than higher-sheen finishes, making it a great choice for spaces where you want a balance between style and practicality.

Silk

Silk has a subtle sheen that reflects more light, helping to brighten a room while offering added durability. Its smooth finish makes it a popular choice for busy areas that may require more frequent cleaning.

For kitchens, bathrooms and other demanding spaces, consider easyclean®. It's designed for everyday living, by combining durability, washability and long-lasting colour across a range of specialist finishes.

Visit our product range page to compare finishes and find the right option for your project.

Which paint is best for kitchens and bathrooms?

Kitchens and bathrooms need specialist paints that can handle moisture, condensation, grease and everyday cleaning.

Crown Paints offers dedicated solutions within the easyclean® range, designed specifically for these environments:

easyclean® Kitchen Matt Emulsion features GREASEGUARD+ technology, which helps stubborn grease and stains wipe away easily.

It is an advanced, wipeable and durable multi-surface matt emulsion suitable for walls, wood and metal. It is specially formulated for kitchen environments where cooking residue and everyday splashes are common.

easyclean® Bathroom Mid Sheen Emulsion features MOULDGUARD+ technology, helping to protect against mould growth while also being resistant to condensation and steam.

It is a durable, wipeable multi-surface paint suitable for walls, wood and metal. It is specially formulated for bathroom conditions where humidity levels are high.

Both options are designed to be easy to clean and help maintain a long-lasting finish in demanding environments.

What is easyclean® paint?

easyclean® is a range of durable, wipeable paints designed to help everyday marks, stains and spills be cleaned away more easily than standard interior paints.

The range includes specialist formulations for different rooms around the home, including kitchens and bathrooms, as well as options for walls, wood and metal surfaces.

easyclean® paints are designed to deliver long-lasting colour and durability, making them ideal for busy households and high-traffic areas.

How do I choose the right paint colour?

A great place to start is by considering existing furniture, flooring, soft furnishings and accessories that will remain in the room.

Once you've shortlisted colours, we recommend ordering paint samples to test them in your space.

Natural and artificial light can significantly affect how a colour appears throughout the day, so always view samples in different areas of the room before making a final decision.

Do I need primer or undercoat?

Whether you need a primer or undercoat depends on the surface you're painting and the condition it's in.

Primer is typically used on new, bare or difficult surfaces to help paint adhere properly.

Undercoat helps create an even base and can improve colour coverage, particularly when making a significant colour change.

Always check the product instructions for guidance on surface preparation and recommended application methods.

How long does paint take to dry?

Drying times vary depending on the product, room temperature, humidity levels and ventilation.

Most water-based paints will become touch dry within a few hours, but may require longer before applying a second coat.

For the most accurate drying and recoating times, please refer to the product information provided on the product page and packaging.

Allow paint to dry fully before placing furniture against walls or exposing painted surfaces to heavy use.

Where can I find product safety information?

Product Data Sheets (PDS) are available for all products sold on our website.

These documents provide important information about product application, performance, storage and safety.

You can download the relevant documents directly here.

Can I recycle paint tins?

Yes. Crown Paints plastic and metal paint tins can be recycled once they are completely empty.

You can recycle empty tins at your local Crown Decorating Centre or through your local authority recycling scheme where facilities are available.

Please do not dispose of leftover paint in drains, watercourses or household waste systems. Any unused paint should be taken to an authorised waste disposal facility.

Painting Advice

Where should I start when painting a room?

For the best results, work from top to bottom.

We recommend painting in the following order:

  • Ceiling
  • Walls
  • Doors
  • Skirting boards and trim

This approach helps avoid drips and ensures a cleaner finish.

Visit our Advice Hub for more decorating tips and step-by-step guides.

Can I paint over existing paint?

In most cases, yes. Existing painted surfaces can usually be painted over as long as they are clean, dry and in good condition.

Before painting, we recommend:

  • Removing dust, dirt and grease
  • Filling any cracks or holes
  • Sanding rough or damaged areas
  • Ensuring any loose or flaking paint has been removed

Preparing the surface correctly helps achieve a smoother finish and improves paint adhesion.

What tools do I need for painting?

The right tools can make decorating easier and help achieve a professional-looking finish.

We recommend:

  • Masking tape for clean edges
  • Dust sheets to protect floors and furniture
  • Rollers for large surfaces
  • Brushes for detailed work and cutting in
  • Paint trays and accessories for efficient application

Visit our decorating tools section for everything you need to complete your project.

Which roller or brush should I use?

For most wall painting projects, a medium pile roller provides excellent coverage and a smooth finish.

  • Short pile rollers are ideal for smooth surfaces
  • Medium pile rollers are suitable for most interior walls
  • Long pile rollers are best for textured or rough surfaces such as masonry

For brushes:

  • Synthetic bristle brushes are ideal for water-based paints
Natural bristle brushes are generally recommended for oil-based paints

Using the correct tools can help improve coverage, finish quality and ease of application.
