How To Get Paint Out Of Carpet: Without Losing Your Cool

Spilled paint on your carpet? Take a deep breath – you’re not alone, and it’s absolutely fixable. Whether it’s a little splash from a DIY moment gone rogue or a full-on “how did that even happen?” situation, we’ve got your back.

At Crown, we believe decorating should feel joyful, not stressful. So let’s tackle that paint spill together, step by step, with a little patience and a lot of confidence.

First Things First: Don't Panic

It might look like a disaster, but acting quickly makes all the difference. The sooner you deal with the spill, the easier it’ll be to remove.

Top tip: resist the urge to scrub straight away. We know – it’s tempting. But scrubbing can push the paint deeper into the carpet fibres. And we don’t want that.

Step 1: Identify The Paint

Before you begin, figure out what kind of paint you’re dealing with:

  • Water-based paint (like emulsion) – the easiest to remove
  • Oil or solvent-based paint (like gloss or satin) – a bit trickier, but still manageable

Not sure? A quick check of the tin or leftover packaging should help. And solvent-based paints normally have a strong chemical smell.

Step 2: Tackle Wet Paint

If the paint is still wet, you’re in luck.

What to do:

  1. Scrape up any large spills with a paint scraper, filler knife or similar – a spoon will do!
  2. Gently blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel
  3. Avoid rubbing – just press and lift
  4. Mix a little warm water with mild washing-up liquid
  5. Dab the stain with your solution using a clean cloth
  6. Blot dry and repeat until the paint lifts

You should start to see progress quickly.

Step 3: Dealing With Dried Paint

Okay, so the paint’s already dried. Don’t worry – it just needs a bit more patience.

For water-based paint:

  1. Carefully scrape off excess paint with a blunt knife
  2. Dampen the area with warm, soapy water
  3. Let it sit for a few minutes to soften
  4. Blot gently and repeat as needed

For oil-based paint:

  1. Scrape off any dried paint
  2. Apply a small amount of paint remover or solvent (test in an inconspicuous spot first!)
  3. Dab gently with a cloth
  4. Blot with clean water to remove residue

Take your time here – slow and steady wins the race.

Step 4: Rinse & Refresh

Once the paint is gone (go you!), rinse the area with clean water and blot dry. This helps remove any leftover soap or cleaning solution.

Let the carpet air dry completely and resist stepping on it while it’s damp.

Step 5: Know When To Call In Backup

If the stain is particularly stubborn or your carpet is delicate, it might be worth bringing in a professional cleaner. No shame in that game – it’s all part of keeping your space looking its best.

A Little Reassurance

Spills happen. Decorating isn’t about perfection – it’s about creating a home you love. A paint mishap doesn’t undo your hard work, it just adds to the story, just like Vinnie in our latest advert.

And next time? Maybe pop down a dust sheet first.

You've Got This

With a calm approach and the right steps, paint spills are completely manageable. So roll up your sleeves, take it one step at a time, and know that you’re more than capable of sorting it out.

And when you’re ready to pick up that paintbrush again, we’ll be cheering you on.

Happy decorating!
